Mike Jackson at Smart Art Galleries

October 12th, 2012

Mike Jackson was born in Manchester in 1962 and he explains here some of his early experiences that
influence his artwork today. ‘My upbringing is full of treasured memories that inspire my work – selling my
mum’s best coat to the rag and bone man for a few balloons, holidaying at  Blackpool and Rhyl,
Donkey rides, Punch and Judy, sand in my butties and my mum on Prize Bingo always bring a smile to my face.
This is naturally what I choose  to paint. I love to share the humour of life in my work, If I paint a street
scene with kids playing football, I believe the painting should have all the elements of the moment,
even the old lady telling us to ‘go and play round your  own end’, dogs getting amorous with each other
and the ‘dimp picker’ collecting  fag ends from the pavements. The inclusion of these wonderful
memories makes my paintings much more interesting.’Mike Jackson now live in Somerset, where local
beaches bring extra inspiration to his paintings, living near the coast gives him the opportunity to collect
reference for his new paintings. As Mike says, ‘I love to people watch,  witnessing holiday romancers,
beach bums, screaming kids high on candy floss  and day trippers trying to enjoy their day
whilst over-laden with bucket and  spades, carrier bags full of butties, flasks of tea and sand sodden towels,
queuing for the ‘charrabang’ to go home…deep joy.’

‘It has always been my dream to be able to earn a living as an artist and I
feel so lucky to have my hobby as a job.’

Rolf Harris – Dry Country

September 11th, 2012

Rolf Harris - Dry Country

Rolf Harris -Dry Country”

Canvas Edition £195
Framed £1295
Canvas size: 44″ x 27″

This is a spectacular country in one of the driest parts of Australia where the rocks
seem to have a blue surface  staining to them – they look incredible. The country is so
sparse and barren that it can’t be farmed and the only trees that will grow are these
- affectionately known as parachute trees. They have lots of tiny branches supporting a leafy
canopy - hence the name.

Rolf Harris – Elvis Entertains Limited Edition Framed Giclée Print

September 11th, 2012

Paper Edition of 195 -

Framed £750

Image size: 24″x17″

This was painted from a television show commemorating the fact that Elvis would have been 75 in 2010 had he lived. I feel this picture really captures his huge appeal to the youngsters of the day and I love the two girls at the right of the picture, watching his every move with rapt attention. They are absolutely loving everything he does, loving the way he sounds and the way he performs.

Rolf Harris – Road To Paradise Valley

September 11th, 2012

Canvas Edition of 195 – Framed £1225 Size: 49″x19″

I illustrated the side of a grand piano for DeMontfort Fine Art, with a long complex scene partly made up from my head, partly inspired by photos of country scenes from Northern New South Wales. These photographs showed a very green landscape, but I had in mind a parches, dry scene mainly composed of reds and oranges. When I had finished it, I really loved it so much that I immediately coated a long canvas with orange paint so I could have the pleasure again of painting a similar scene, but in a more right-angled oblong shape. As I eventually got around to working on it, the excitement of painting the scene on the piano was long months away, but as soon as I started, the thrill was there again. I hadn’t realised that the piano was much longer than my canvas, and so couldn’t duplicate the piano work of art. It was of necessity, shorter, but I think, exactly as much fun to paint. I don’t think it would have worked as well had I made all the paddocks green instead of orangey-red.

Ben Payne – Original Painitngs

September 11th, 2012

Ben Payne has built a reputation for creating artwork which is fresh, escapist and above all, uplifting. Born in Surrey in 1975, he began drawing portraits and painting as a hobby; by the age of 16 he was selling his work, and he has now developed into a major British talent. Although he is almost completely self-taught Ben is able to respond to challenges and create artwork that is both technically accomplished and highly accessible.Ben’s degree from Southampton University is a world apart from his artistic life, yet the influence of his academic and professional background can be observed in his art. After graduating in Psychology he became an independent therapist and pursued a career in the field of Autism, working with young children, helping them to overcome their difficulties in communicating with the outside world. Whilst pursuing this career he continued painting in his spare time, teaching himself and extending his range into oils.

Ben’s high-impact land, sky and seascapes are inspired by the landscapes and coastlines around the world. He owes an artistic debt to a range of artists, in particular Turner and Whistler. Their influence can be seen in the way he captures the appearance of clouds with such delicacy, while employing a vivid and dramatic palette – a characteristic which lends his work an ethereal quality.
Ben believes that working with children has taught him to value simplicity and to communicate in a very direct and accessible language. His powerful paintings do display a certain innocence which somehow sets them part from the work of his contemporaries. While his subjects are realistic they often have dreamlike overtones, rendering them an intriguing combination of enchantment and sophistication.

Joe Scarborough is a now an artist of international repute. Born in Pitsmoor, Sheffield in 1938, the artist has created a wealth of everyday ‘real’ images depicting the life and people of South Yorkshire using his own experiences and background.
Joe began work as a laboratory assistant at Batchelors and then became a face worker at the Thorpe Hesley Colliery. He was inspired to paint by the contrast of the darkness of the mines against the lightness of the real world above ground level.
In 1968 disenchantment with the pits he became a ‘Jack of all Trades’. He was a labourer, municipal park gardener and a washer upper for some years, whilst nurturing a dream to be a full-time painter. For years he pushed a hand cart, packed with paintings round all his local pubs selling what he could in almost folk-lore tradition – becoming at times, like the characters he went on to portray in later scenes.
His paintings were popular and sold, sometimes for as much as £10 – an encouragement that led to his life-long dream being realised. His first one-man show lasted for two years at the Attic Cafe near Sheffield’s main bus station. One-man and mixed exhibitions followed which took the everyday scenes of Yorkshire life from Sheffield to Rotherham to London to San Francisco to Chicago and back of course to his first love, Sheffield.
Scarborough paintings now appear in several major collections and numerous works have been imprinted. The images, the humour, the friendships, the story-telling is still the same.
Joe’s largest work dominates the entrance to the Odeon Cinema in Sheffield – a mural depicting the history of Sheffield. The vibrant colours compete with action packed visual narratives of the subjects and scenes portrayed in all Scarborough paintings.
