Mike Jackson at Smart Art Galleries

October 12th, 2012

Mike Jackson was born in Manchester in 1962 and he explains here some of his early experiences that
influence his artwork today. ‘My upbringing is full of treasured memories that inspire my work – selling my
mum’s best coat to the rag and bone man for a few balloons, holidaying at  Blackpool and Rhyl,
Donkey rides, Punch and Judy, sand in my butties and my mum on Prize Bingo always bring a smile to my face.
This is naturally what I choose  to paint. I love to share the humour of life in my work, If I paint a street
scene with kids playing football, I believe the painting should have all the elements of the moment,
even the old lady telling us to ‘go and play round your  own end’, dogs getting amorous with each other
and the ‘dimp picker’ collecting  fag ends from the pavements. The inclusion of these wonderful
memories makes my paintings much more interesting.’Mike Jackson now live in Somerset, where local
beaches bring extra inspiration to his paintings, living near the coast gives him the opportunity to collect
reference for his new paintings. As Mike says, ‘I love to people watch,  witnessing holiday romancers,
beach bums, screaming kids high on candy floss  and day trippers trying to enjoy their day
whilst over-laden with bucket and  spades, carrier bags full of butties, flasks of tea and sand sodden towels,
queuing for the ‘charrabang’ to go home…deep joy.’

‘It has always been my dream to be able to earn a living as an artist and I
feel so lucky to have my hobby as a job.’

Framed size: 21″ x 28″

£3450.00

Joe Scarborough is a now an artist of international repute. Born in Pitsmoor, Sheffield in 1938, the artist has created a wealth of everyday ‘real’ images depicting the life and people of South Yorkshire using his own experiences and background.
Joe began work as a laboratory assistant at Batchelors and then became a face worker at the Thorpe Hesley Colliery. He was inspired to paint by the contrast of the darkness of the mines against the lightness of the real world above ground level.
In 1968 disenchantment with the pits he became a ‘Jack of all Trades’. He was a labourer, municipal park gardener and a washer upper for some years, whilst nurturing a dream to be a full-time painter. For years he pushed a hand cart, packed with paintings round all his local pubs selling what he could in almost folk-lore tradition – becoming at times, like the characters he went on to portray in later scenes.
His paintings were popular and sold, sometimes for as much as £10 – an encouragement that led to his life-long dream being realised. His first one-man show lasted for two years at the Attic Cafe near Sheffield’s main bus station. One-man and mixed exhibitions followed which took the everyday scenes of Yorkshire life from Sheffield to Rotherham to London to San Francisco to Chicago and back of course to his first love, Sheffield.
Scarborough paintings now appear in several major collections and numerous works have been imprinted. The images, the humour, the friendships, the story-telling is still the same.
Joe’s largest work dominates the entrance to the Odeon Cinema in Sheffield – a mural depicting the history of Sheffield. The vibrant colours compete with action packed visual narratives of the subjects and scenes portrayed in all Scarborough paintings.

Alex Lowe Acoustic Show & Art Exhibition – with guest DJ Alan McGee

April 18th, 2012

Brit Pop Kingpin & President of Creation Records Alan McGee comes to

Sheffield on Saturday 28 April

to launch exhibition at city gallery with exclusive DJ set

Alan McGee will be attending the exhibition at Smart Art Galleries which is the first major showcase of paintings by abstract artist Alex Lowe.

The event is in support of Teenage Cancer Trust and will be taking place on 28 April from 7 till 10pm at the Galleries in Totley, Sheffield. Admission is free with donations on the night going to the charity. Andrew Hunt, Smart Art Galleries said: “We are supporting Teenage Cancer Trust because the charity recognises the importance of providing the essential care and education required to ensure young people have the best chance of life”.

Alex Lowe, the former front man of Creation Records act Hurricane #1, launches his new career at the event with full support of his former label boss. Alan McGee, the man who discovered and signed Oasis, Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream and Hurricane #1 to his legendary label Creation Records has described Alex Lowe as “a great artist, good singer and an amazing painter. 2012 will be his.”

Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the six young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. The charity builds specialist units within NHS hospitals, bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them.

Teenage Cancer Trust has funded, built and now maintains 21 of these units across the UK including two in Sheffield, one at Weston Park Hospital and one at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The charity plans to build a further 11 so that all young people needing hospital treatment for cancer across the UK have access to the dedicated, specialist support they provide, no matter where they live.

Alex Lowe shot to fame in the late 90’s as the singer with Hurricane #1 who lit up the Brit Pop era with a string of top 40 hit singles and two top 20 albums. His new vocation, however, is taking him to even wider reaches than his illustrious Brit Pop career. Woody Allen, Mike Tyson, Donald Trump all own original paintings by Alex Lowe as does his old boss Alan McGee. Alex Lowe and Alan McGee are also working on a new art project entitled ‘The Aquarian Conspiracy’ which is due to appear in spring 2012. There are no further details at present but Alex promises that it will be “genius with a twist”.

The exhibition at Smart Art Galleries will also include an acoustic set by Alex Lowe. Alex has continued to write and perform music alongside his painting and plans to release new music this year.
